What does acupuncture actually feel like?

It's the question I'm asked more than any other, usually with a slightly nervous smile. Here's an honest answer, so you know what to expect before your first visit.

Almost everyone who books a first appointment arrives with the same quiet worry: is this going to hurt? It's a fair thing to wonder. Most of us have only ever met a needle at the doctor's or during a blood test, and those are a very different tool for a very different job.

So before we talk about anything else, let's talk about the needles themselves.

Acupuncture needles are far finer than you're imagining

An acupuncture needle is about the width of a couple of strands of hair. You could fit dozens of them inside the tube of a single hypodermic needle. They're solid rather than hollow, and they're designed to slip through the skin rather than cut into it. That difference is most of the reason acupuncture feels so unlike the needles you already know.

When a needle is placed, many people feel nothing at all. Others notice a brief, faint sensation as it passes the surface, more of a tap or a fleeting prickle than a sting, and then it settles.

The feeling once the needles are in

This is the part that tends to surprise people. Once a needle is resting in place, you might feel a gentle heaviness, a spreading warmth, a dull ache, or a soft tingling around the point. In Chinese medicine this sensation has a name, de qi, and it's generally taken as a sign the point is responding. It isn't sharp and it isn't painful. Most people describe it as oddly grounding.

And then, for the rest of the session, the needles simply rest. There's nothing you need to do. You lie comfortably, the room is quiet and warm, and your only job is to let go.

Most people are surprised by how deeply they relax. It's common to drift off, or to lose track of time entirely.

What the rest of the appointment is like

A treatment isn't only the needles. Your first visit begins with a proper conversation: your health history, how you've been sleeping and feeling, what's brought you in. From there, points are chosen for you, not from a set formula, and the treatment is shaped around the person on the table that day.

You stay comfortably covered and draped throughout. If anything ever feels like too much, you say so, and it's adjusted or removed straight away. Comfort isn't a nice extra here; it's the whole point.

How you might feel afterwards

People leave in different states. Some feel calm and a little dreamy, the way you might after a long, unhurried rest. Others feel light and clear. It's a good idea to drink some water, go gently for the rest of the day where you can, and notice how you sleep that night.

If you've been curious but the needles were the thing holding you back, I hope this settles some of it. The experience is far softer than the word "needle" suggests.

Your first appointment is a 90-minute initial acupuncture consultation: unhurried time to talk everything through before any treatment begins. If you'd like to ask something first, you're always welcome to get in touch.
