Beyond acupuncture: cupping, moxibustion and gua sha

A gentle introduction to additional techniques that may be considered as part of your individual treatment plan.

Acupuncture is at the heart of care at Ānshén. Depending on your individual needs, Jaz may also discuss other traditional techniques with you. These are considered as part of a broader treatment plan and explained before they are used.

Cupping

Cupping uses cups to create suction on the skin. People often notice a drawing sensation during the technique, and temporary circular marks may appear afterwards. Let Jaz know about any skin conditions, medicines or concerns so you can discuss whether it is appropriate for you.

Moxibustion

Moxibustion involves warming selected areas or acupuncture points using dried mugwort, known as moxa. Your comfort is important: the technique and sensation will be explained, and you can speak up at any time.

Gua sha

Gua sha uses a smooth tool in repeated strokes over the skin. Temporary redness or marks can occur. As with any technique, your health history and preferences are considered first.

Care shaped around you

These techniques are not included automatically. Your appointment starts with a discussion of your health, concerns and goals, followed by an individualised Chinese medicine assessment. You are welcome to ask questions, let Jaz know your preferences or decline a technique.
